A Legacy of Wildlife Conservation

Manas National Park in Assam has a remarkable conservation history spanning more than a century. The region began receiving formal forest protection in the early 20th century and was declared a Wildlife Sanctuary in 1928. In 1973, Manas became one of India's pioneering Project Tiger reserves, with the sanctuary forming the core of the Manas Tiger Reserve. The sanctuary received international recognition when it was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1985, followed by its declaration as a Biosphere Reserve in 1989. In 1990, Manas Wildlife Sanctuary was upgraded to Manas National Park. Today, the Manas landscape is renowned for its rich biodiversity, Himalayan foothill forests, grasslands, rivers and rare wildlife, making it one of Assam's most significant destinations for wildlife conservation, nature tourism and safari experiences.
